Open Book Experimental Book Workshop
OPEN BOOK EXPERIMENTAL BOOK WORKSHOP
http://openbookworkshop.com/
Faculty: Denise Gonzales Crisp and Christopher Baker
Dates: July 29-August 6, 2011
Cost: $700
This nine-day intensive experimental book workshop intended for artists,
designers, writers, graduate students, etc. The venue is EMU’s Parsons
Center, out in the country near Traverse City, Michigan, walking distance to
Lake Anne. Please go to the website for application materials.
Over the last two decades, there have been a number of essays—and,
ironically, books—that predict the demise of traditional books in the
wake of digital media. Defining the term “book” loosely, as a vehicle
for visual or verbal content that is organized into “sections,” this
intensive nine-day workshop will challenge overly simplistic ideas
about the demise of physical books by stressing instead the ways novel
renditions of physical and digital and hybrid “books” carry meaning.
The objective is to encourage participants to explore unconventional
forms that books may take and to create an artwork/designed object
that challenges ideas of what books can be.
The nine-day intensive workshop is organized by Eastern Michigan
University faculty Leslie Atzmon and Ryan Molloy. It will be led by
Denise Gonzales Crisp and Christopher Baker. While the instructors
will guide the direction of and lead discussions at the workshop,
participants will be asked to contribute their particular knowledge
and skill sets and contribute to the topic through presentations of
their ideas and their creative work or research. The workshop is open
to students, educators, and professionals from all disciplines.
Participants will be supplied basic art materials as part of the
workshop. Other materials can be purchased at art supply stores in
nearby Traverse City.
This Open Book workshop is an offshoot of the Open Book experimental
book exhibition that was held in Eastern Michigan University’s
University Gallery from April 3 to June 15, 2010.

The New Year at Hollander’s
After 18 years in business in the Kerrytown Shops, last year we decided to open a brand new store, Hollander’s Kitchen & Home. So far we have been very pleased with the response and encouragement from our customers. We are excited to begin 2010 in the same manner as we have for the past two decades with a focus on bringing in great new products, offering unique classes and events, and maintaining our commitment to great customer service.Last week we returned from a trade show in Atlanta where we looked for new and unique products. As we await the arrival of our new product lines, we already have new store displays in place that feature Valentine’s Day cards for kid’s and adults, gift wrap, and journals in our stationery store. Upstairs, in our Kitchen and Home store, we have many great gifts from pink champagne glasses to heart-shaped cookie cutters and ramekins.
We have also put together two full sets of classes for the new year. One is our traditional Book and Paper Arts Workshop Schedule, which is now in its 15th year, while the other is an offering of over 30 new Cooking Classes.
Our Book and Paper Arts workshops begin next weekend with a class in Basic Home Book Repair. The following weekend is a class in Box Making, which focuses on making several structures including the two that are featured in our box making book that was published last year. For those who would like to try their hand at an intriguing book arts structure, check out Jean Buescher’s Flax Book with Woven Tapes at the end of the month.
Our January Cooking Classes also begin next week. At these fast paced, one hour sessions this month, you can learn how to prepare Chicken Cordon Bleu, an International Brunch, Bolognese and Vodka Pasta Sauces, and two South American dishes called Chupe and Arepas. You can also check our website for details of these and future classes.
With all that is new at Hollander’s right now, we hope you get a chance to come in and visit us soon. We plan to continue to send out regular updates of happenings at Hollander’s.

Hands in a Sea of Paper
In 2008, Hollander’s School of Book & Paper Arts initiated a summer residency program for artists working in book arts and affiliated fields. Tom and Cindy Hollander invited the WSG Gallery of Ann Arbor, Michigan, to participate in their summer residency program of 2009 and many of the members of the gallery were able to take advantage of the opportunity.
Barbara Brown provides a synopsis of the residency:
In planning our residency during the 2009 summer season, WSG artists decided to work on several projects: Alvey Jones asked both visitors from the public as well as WSG artists and Hollander’s staff to make either a drawing, collage or paste paper art piece which he photographed, scanned and used for a limited spiral bound edition of 50 books titled “Hands in a Sea of Paper“. A special sewn binding was to be presented to Hollander’s.
Barbara Brown taught a board binding to the WSG artists and several people completed books which were placed on display at WSG Gallery. We used paste paper, mono prints, collages, and cyano prints for decorating the boards. Each artist also made a board to contribute to a book for Hollander’s. This also included a clamshell box.
Erin Hoffman, a printmaker, made collograph and intaglio prints of her own as well as teaching WSG artists several printmaking techniques and helping them to make print runs.
Barbara Brown taught paste paper techniques to several WSG artists and also had a table with supplies for visitors to use. This was one of the projects we offered to the public along with supplies to make collages.
We had a lot of visitors this summer, and we had a great time not only working with each other, something we have never had a chance to do before, but also with the public.
Many thanks to Tom and Cindy, and especially Ben Reynaert, who helped so much to organize it all, and the entire Hollander’s staff!
